USAID/ADP Study Tour Fosters Innovations in Moldovan Fruit and Vegetable Production

The use of modern production practices and marketing techniques in fruit and vegetable production are essential to sustaining Moldova’s industry competitiveness and production output levels. To support Moldovan producers and processors in adapting modern technologies in their agribusiness operations, the USAID/CNFA’s Agribusiness Development Project organized a study tour to Turkey between March 28 and April 7, 2005. With an overall goal to increase the competitiveness of Moldovan producers and agribusiness enterprises in domestic and export markets, the tour was successful in encouraging the implementation of new practices in the Moldovan agricultural sector.

Ten Moldovan participants attended the 10-day tour and have witnessed major improvements in their production practices in the past year, after returning home. Fortina Labis company of Ungheni, for example, has installed modern drip and sprinkler irrigation systems on their vegetable fields, which were expanded from 16 ha to 23 ha and generated a triple increase in vegetable sales in 2005 compared to the previous year. It was during this study tour that Fortina Labis founder, Mr. Anatolii Placinta, learned about modern low-tunnel production of tomatoes and trellis systems for cucumbers. Similarly to Fortina Labis, 4 other Moldovan companies, Sant Agro, Vindex-Agro, Stefan Chitoroaga FF and Interconsult-MD, have all implemented drip irrigation systems and increased vegetable output as a result of applying low tunnels and anti-frost technologies. Interconsult-MD has become a major supplier of fresh strawberries on the domestic retail market, as a result of proper product post-harvest handling, refrigeration and packaging improvements. All participating companies are currently sharing results of their production improvements with other Moldovan producers, which are able to participate in field days and on-site training events organized by ADP and partner organizations ACSA and UAP.

While the long-term benefits of new production methods imported to Moldova as a result of the Turkish study tour are to be harvested over the next few years, it is clear that the future prospects of Moldovan agribusiness development are contingent upon a large-scale application of this type of practices. These will allow Moldova’s competitive supply of quality high value crops on domestic and international markets.
