Moldovan Farmer Implements an Irrigation System that Increases Farm Profits after USAID/ADP Domestic Study Tour

The application of modern technologies in today’s marketplace is vital for achieving a competitive agricultural production. Producers, however, often lack financial resources and modern knowledge-based practices in their agribusiness operations. The USAID-funded Agribusiness Development Project (ADP) assists Moldovan growers and processors to improve their production methods and apply modern technologies, so that Moldovan high-value agricultural output can be competitive on export markets. Among different technical assistance interventions rendered to local farms, USAID/ADP organizes domestic study tours for producers interested in observing modern and innovative production practices. One such tour was organized on June 1, 2005 for a selected group of 26 vegetable producers, to familiarize them with advanced production methods used on model Moldovan farms.

Mr. Anatolie Glodeanu, founder and owner of his family farm enterprise, was one of the participants who attended the study tour. He started his farm 12 years ago on 2.5 ha of land in Manoilesti; this year, Anatolie’s farm land tripled, after he decided to expand his open-field and greenhouse production areas. To increase farm efficiency, Anatolie invested in several pieces of agricultural equipment, including tractors, harrows with disks, a cultivator and a seeder. More recently, ADP’s Study Tour on Advanced Vegetable Production helped Anatolie decide about the type of irrigation best suited for his production needs. He purchased a sprinkler and drip irrigation systems for a production area of 0,4 ha. After adding 0.5 ha of new greenhouse operations, Anatolie also hired 4 new workers to manage the vegetable operations. The farm produces high-quality tomatoes and cucumbers and Anatolie is able to export a third of his output to Romania. Encouraged by the results of his recent investments, Anatolie plans to expand the total production area by another 2.5 ha next year. “The use of modern production practices, especially irrigation, in vegetable production improved the quality of my farm’s output and generated more income. I am optimistic about the prospects of my greenhouse and I am looking forward to investing more in my agribusiness operation”, says Anatolie.

USAID/CNFA’s Agribusiness Development Project organizes domestic study tours and field training activities in an effort to encourage sharing of information and best practices among leading fruit and vegetable producers in the country. In doing so, ADP seeks to achieve its overall objective of increasing incomes and creating new jobs in rural areas through improved competitiveness of Moldovan HVA production.
