Moldovan Walnut Sector: Constraints Analysis – Toward the Formation of a Durable Competitive Sector (April 2009)

...July 1, 2009

The Moldovan Walnut Sector has enjoyed significant development since its conception in the early 1990s. From a non-commercial activity inherited from the Soviets it has become one of the leading export sectors of the country – quite a success story for the independent Moldovan economy! Today, the time has come to recognize and view the walnut sector as an industry in the context of the larger global economy and identify constraints and challenges that need to be addressed in order to put into place the framework needed to support continued competitive development. Reports and publications on the sector commissioned by different organizations over the last few years represented either a statistical outlook or addressed only separate sub-sectors. This report is an effort to view the sector as one single and inter-dependant Cluster where the individual components depend on one another and are critical to the success of the sector’s global goal – that of ensuring its long term competitive and durable development.
